How to Install Glass Expressions Micro Blocks From Shaw

Glass tiles should not be treated the same as ceramic tiles for installation purposes because glass is more inclined to shatter. Glass Expressions Micro Blocks made by Shaw Floors are similar to ceramic wall tiles, but are made of glass. The prisms formed by channels and angles in the mini glass blocks create special reflective lighting effects. These tiles are designed as "accent" tiles, which means the tiler uses them to create patterns, designs and borders, primarily on kitchen and bathroom walls.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw the design on paper. Whether you are tiling a backsplash, inserting a glass tile stripe or creating a pattern, you must be totally sure of the tile placement before commencing the actual physical tiling.

    • 2

Clean the surface thoroughly with detergent to remove all grease, and wash off with clean water. If you are making a complex design, use a tape measure and draw it onto the wall with pencil, showing where each tile will fit. Cut the membrane holding the mini blocks together with scissors between the blocks to the correct size and shape.

    • 3

Spread the manufacturer's recommended glass tile thinset or mortar and anti-fracture membrane in ridges on the wall with a V-notch toothed trowel. Press the tiles into the mortar, Make certain they are straight and level and insert spacers to maintain even spacing between the tiles. Allow the mortar to dry for 24 hours.

    • 4

Spread non-sanded grout with a rubber float. Sanded grout can cause scratching on glass tiles. Force the grout into the joints, and wipe of the excess with a damp sponge. Buff to a shine with a dry cheesecloth after 48 hours.
