How to Fix Squeaky Hardwood Steps With Baby Powder

Rustic old homes, with their hardwood flooring and large, spacious rooms, have a vintage charm about them. Though the floors and staircase may be beautifully refinished and stained the color of rich mahogany, the seams between to wood may emit a high squeaking noise when weight is applied. Squeaking hardwood is generally a normal occurrence and does not signal the need for extensive repair work. In fact, most squeaks can be eliminated using baby powder, a hand broom and a rubber mallet.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush the steps clean using a brush and dustpan. If desired, wipe the area with hardwood floor cleaner and a damp rag. This prevents any dust and dirt from becoming mixed in with the baby powder.

    • 2

Sprinkle a thick layer of baby powder over the squeaky portion of the step. Spread it over the seams between the hardwood using a hand broom, ensuring that most of it lodges in the crevices.

    • 3

Pound the seams with a rubber mallet to help the powder settle between the wood.

    • 4

Sweep up any excess powder using your broom and dust pan. Wipe the step clean using a damp rag. Avoid saturating the baby powder within the seams with water while wiping the step clean.

    • 5

Repeat for each squeaking step on the staircase. To ensure that the squeaking does not start again, repeat the process monthly.
