How to Dissolve Polyurethane on a Floor

Polyurethane glue adheres well to wood, metal and stone flooring. This glue type reacts to moisture in the air when drying, which causes it to expand. Glue expansion is important when preventing tiny crevices from forming in floor joints or materials glued to flooring. Often, homeowners want to dissolve their polyurethane glue after a spill or to remove the object glued to the floor. Because polyurethane isn't water soluble, use a dissolving liquid that contains alcohol.

Things You'll Need

• Cotton swab
• Denatured alcohol
• Putty knife
• Paper towel
• Fine-grit sandpaper
• Latex gloves

     Dip a cotton swab into denatured alcohol. Rub the polyurethane glue with the cotton swab.

     Pour 1 tsp. of denatured alcohol on the dried polyurethane glue. Wait one hour for the denatured alcohol to dissolve the glue.

     Scrape up the glue with a putty knife. Wipe down the area with a paper towel to remove excess glue.

     Sand the area with a piece of fine-grit sandpaper to remove any excess glue.

     Wipe off the area to remove the sandpaper grit.
