How to Fix Bubbling Laminate

Air trapped under laminate flooring creates air bubbles. Although the bubbles may start small, they may increase in size over time. Large bubbles create a dangerous tripping hazard. Pulling furniture across a bubbling laminate floor may rip a hole through the bubble. Fixing bubbling laminate is a simple task as long as the bubbles are noticed early. With care, you can repair the floor with little to no noticeable marks.

Instructions

  1. Small Bubbles

    • 1

Poke a hole through the center of the bubble with a needle to release the air in the bubble.

    • 2

Cover the bubbles with a towel and run an iron over the towel to soften the flooring and adhesive. If the floor is relatively new, there may be enough adhesive on the laminate to get the bubble to stick in place.

    • 3

Inject flooring adhesive into the bubble if the floor is older and there is not enough adhesive to hold the bubble down. You can purchase syringes with flooring adhesive at most home improvement stores.

    • 4

Place a piece of wax paper over the bubble and add weighted objects to hold the bubble down while the adhesive bonds.

    Large Bubbles

    • 5

Cover the bubble with a towel and run a hot iron over it to soften the laminate and the adhesive underneath.

    • 6

Cut an X into the center of the bubble with a razor knife, cutting all the way through the laminate.

    • 7

Peel back each of the four triangular sections to reveal the subfloor underneath.

    • 8

Apply flooring adhesive directly to the subfloor and let it set until it gets tacky according to the product manufacturer's instructions.

    • 9

Push each of the four triangular sections back down onto the subfloor. Make sure the sections line up with no overlap.

    • 10

Cover the area with wax paper and place a weighted object on top for at least 24 hours to ensure the adhesive bonds to the laminate.

    • 11

Clean any oozing adhesive with lacquer thinner so the floor is flat.

    • 12

Apply a bead of clear vinyl seam sealer to the cuts you made into the laminate.
