How to Level an Uneven Bathroom Floor

When to you go to floor or re-floor a room, almost any material you choose needs a flat, firm surface under it, or the new floor won’t lay right. If the existing floor is uneven from movement over time, it’s important that you even it out with floor leveler, a very thin cement that spreads out and provides a flat surface. If you believe the unevenness is due to structural issues, have it inspected by a professional before you proceed.

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Household cleanser
  • Mop
  • 4-foot 2-by-4 straight board

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the water valve behind the toilet. Disconnect the water line from the tank using an adjustable wrench. Take out the two floor bolts that hold down the toilet base. Lift and remove the toilet.

    • 2

Clean the existing bathroom floor with floor cleanser and a mop. Rinse well. Let it dry for 24 hours.

    • 3

Set your straight 2-by-4 on one of its long narrow edges at one end of the room. Pull it slowly across the floor, assessing the line where the board meets the floor. Wherever there is space between the board and the floor, draw a circle to encompass the area. Continue moving the board and drawing circles around all the low spots.

    • 4

Combine powered level and water in the bucket in the ratio called for on the leveler packaging. Mix with the drill and mixing bit, to a thin, watery consistency.

    • 5

Pour the mixed leveler over each low spot as marked with the circles, starting at the far end of the room from the entrance. Pour it slowly and let it spread out. Work your way over the whole floor.

    • 6

Let it set for 12 hours. Install your top-flooring before re-installing the toilet.
