Run a dust mop over the hardwood floors to removed dirt and dust. Use a damp cloth to wipe away grime stuck to the floors. Dry the area with a clean cloth.
Buff the hardwood floors with a floor-buffing machine. This prepares the floors for the new coat of polyurethane. You can rent these machines at home improvement stores and floor installation outlets.
Apply the water-based polyurethane with a paintbrush and floor-finish applicator. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the amount.
Let the polyurethane dry for two to three hours. Apply a second and third coat.
Clean any wet spills immediately with damp cloths. Dry the floor completely. Standing water and moisture will ruin and warp hardwood floors.
Mop up dust and dirt frequently with a dust mop. Standing dirt alone can scratch hardwood floors.
Place area rugs where the floors receive the most foot traffic. Typical places include near the front door, along hallways and in the center of a room, beneath coffee tables.
Adhere felt furniture protectors to the bottoms of furniture legs. When you move furniture, attach thick furniture leg pads to the bottoms of the legs to keep from scratching the hardwood.
