How to Fix Floor Popping Noises

A popping from your floor boards may have several causes. Improper installation of the floorboards can cause issues with floor noise especially if the gaps between floorboards are not wide enough. Nails that do not penetrate the floorboard or are improperly spaced will also cause the floor to pop. Ensuring that your floor is properly installed as well as securing any loose floorboards will usually stop any popping from occurring.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the floorboard spacing. Panels should have a gap of a 1/8 inch to prevent popping. Tongue and groove flooring should be properly spaced because of the way the boards fit together.

    • 2

Inspect where the floor joists and the boards meet in the basement.

    • 3

Slide a thin piece of wood, called a shim, in areas where the nails come loose from the joist. Drive a screw at an angle through the shim and into the flooring above to secure the board in place and prevent the popping.

Remove the nails from above and install longer nails if all the nails look loose or are not touching the joists. Space the nails every 4 inches to prevent movement of the floorboards.
