How to Keep My Rug From Bubbling Up

Carpet and area rug bubbles are unwelcome house guests. They are unsightly eyesores, often popping up at the worst possible time. Steam cleaning, day-to-day wear and tear and moving furniture are all culprits responsible for rug bubbles, or bunching. This is an easy fix, but it is sometimes preventable.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep steam cleaning and professional cleanings to a maximum of twice each year as excessive steam cleaning causes carpet bubbles. Regular vacuuming is all that is generally required. Remove shoes upon entering a home to eliminate the source of dirt that may increase the need for excessive steam cleaning. Spot-clean areas as they become dirty.

    • 2

Loosen the tack strips, if necessary. Lift up the bubbled section of the carpet. Use tape or adhesive against the back of the carpet and on the pad to prevent future bubbling in those areas. Lay the carpet back onto the area and flatten the adhesive by walking on it for several minutes. Restretch the carpet and replace the tack strip, if necessary.

    • 3

Unroll a non-slip pad against the back of your area rug, if it is bubbling up.

    • 4

Lay one end of the nonslip pad onto the back of the rug. Roll it out to the opposite end of the rug.

    • 5

Cut the roll to fit the back of the rug, making sure it stretches to each corner. Press the pad against the rug firmly so the pad grips the back of the rug.

    • 6

Place the rug on the floor and walk on it until it lies flat to prevent bubbling or creasing.
