How to Remove a Dent From a Cork Floor

Cork flooring can create a durable surface that resists most minor damage. Dents can develop, however, when something large falls or sits in place for a long time on the flooring. The only way to remove the dent is to remove the flooring. Depending on the dent’s location, removal of the damaged board may also mean removal of the undamaged surrounding boards. Once you replace the damaged area, you can return the other boards to their place.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear the furniture from the room so that you can have clear access to the dented area.

    • 2

Examine the floor to determine the nearest wall to the dent that runs parallel to the dented boards.

    • 3

Remove the baseboard along the parallel wall with a pry bar. Place the pry bar tip into the gap between the top of the board and the wall. Work the bar down behind the board and then apply pressure to the rear of the board to pull it away from the wall. Move down the board and apply pressure at each point where the board is nailed into the wall until you’ve completely pulled it from the wall. Set the board aside.

Begin unhooking the cork floorboards from the floor beginning at the parallel wall and continuing toward the dented boards until you’ve unhooked and removed the dented boards as well. Unhook the boards by tilting the unconnected end upward from the floor to about a 45-degree angle and then pulling the board free. Remove as few boards as possible to reach the damaged area, working with only two or three boards in each row if possible.

Replace the dented boards with new cork floorboards. Hook the tongue of the replacement boards into the grooves of the older floorboards still in place, holding the replacement boards at a 45-degree angle. Push the raised end of the board down until its level with the surface of the subfloor. You’ll hear a slight click as the new board locks in place.

Replace the boards that you removed to reach the damaged boards, hooking them into place like you did the replacement boards until you reach the wall. Replace the baseboard, nailing it back to the wall in the same position.
