How to Fix a Hole Burnt in a Carpet

Minor carpet repairs, including repairing an area with a burnt hole or a small stain, can often be made without hiring a professional. You can trim away burnt carpet fibers, but the portion of the carpet with a hole must be removed and replaced with a patch. Although cutting through the carpet may sound intimidating, the process is a fairly straightforward one, thanks to a special tool designed specifically for this purpose.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a circle through the carpet and around the damaged area with a carpet patch tool. The circular tool looks like a large cookie cutter, but features a razor blade that points downward. Press the tool into the carpet and rotate the tool in a complete circle while maintaining downward pressure, then lift the cut piece away from the floor.

    • 2

Cut a circle out of a strip of double-faced seam tape with a razor knife. Cut the circle so that it is slightly larger than the opening in the floor.

    • 3

Peel the tack paper off both sides of the tape.

    • 4

Fold the seam tape slightly and insert the tape within the hole on the floor.

    • 5

Cut a patch piece out of the replacement carpet using the carpet patch tool.

    • 6

Apply a bead of carpet seam adhesive to the edge of the patch.

    • 7

Press the patch piece onto the seam tape.
