How to Remove Scratches From Limestone

Limestone's abundance and durability made it a common building material throughout history. In modern times, limestone is more often used as a decoration in thin tile or sheet form. Unfinished limestone is susceptible to scratches and etching from wear, acidic cleaning products and infrequent cleaning. If minor surface scratches occur, fix them at home with ultra-fine steel wool. Deeper scratches require care from a professional.

Instructions

    • 1

Buff the scratches lightly in small, circular motions with dry 0000 grade steel wool. Sweep away any dust with your hand to inspect the limestone as you work.

    • 2

Vacuum the limestone on a hard floor setting to remove any dust or debris.

    • 3

Fill a bucket with 1 gallon of warm water and add stone cleaner according to the package directions. Dip a mop or cloth in the bucket and wring it out. Mop or wipe the limestone thoroughly.

    • 4

Empty the bucket and refill it with clean, cold water. Mop or wipe the limestone with clean water to rinse away any product residue.

    • 5

Dry the limestone thoroughly with a soft towel. Inspect the limestone for any remaining scratches when it's completely dry. If any scratches remain, consult a stone care professional.
