Removing Scorch Marks From Wood Flooring

Wood flooring, like any kind of wood, will burn if a cigarette, cigar or other lit item is dropped on it and left there. Plus, a gouge where the lit item has burned down into the wood usually accompanies the scorch. Thus, the repair usually involves not just resurfacing the flooring but filling in the gouge. However, wood putty, followed by polyurethane, can make it look as if it never happened.

Things You'll Need

  • Sandpaper, in rough and fine grit
  • Wood putty of the same color as the floor
  • Putty knife
  • Small artist’s paintbrush
  • Polyurethane gloss

Instructions

    • 1

Use the edge of rough sandpaper to sand out the inside of the scorch mark, removing all the blackened material.

    • 2

Sand the inside of the area again, using fine sandpaper, to get the surface smooth and clean. Blow out the dust.

    • 3

Press wood putty into the gouge with a putty knife, using the flat end to flatten the putty.

    • 4

Let the putty set 12 hours.

    • 5

Sand the putty very lightly with the fine sandpaper. Blow off the dust.

    • 6

Spread a thin, light layer of polyurethane over the putty. Let it dry for six hours. Lightly degloss the surface with your fine sandpaper. Blow off the dust. Brush on a second layer of polyurethane. Let it dry for 12 hours before walking on it.
