Repairing Scratches on Laminate Flooring With a Maple Finish

Laminate flooring is generally composed of particle board, with a wood veneer or plastic over the top of it. This means that you cannot sand out scratches the way that you can with a wood floor. A better fix for a laminate floor is as simple as using a crayon, which is made of wax and can fill in that scratch and become almost invisible once you wipe it down. Maple finishes on laminate floors are lighter than most other finishes, but crayons come in just about any color you could need.

Things You'll Need

  • Cotton cloth
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Crayon (same color as the maple finish)
  • Plastic putty knife

Instructions

    • 1

Wet a cotton cloth in rubbing alcohol and rub it over the scratches to get them clean and free of dust and debris.

    • 2

Run the tip of your crayon lengthwise over the first scratch, pressing hard enough to leave wax in the scratch. Repeat for each scratch.

    • 3

Run the edge of your putty knife forward over the length of each scratch, scraping off the crayon wax that’s sitting above the surface of the floor and pressing the rest of it down into the scratches.

    • 4

Wipe the area vigorously with the alcohol-soaked cloth to take up the residual wax.

    • 5

Assess the scratches to see if the wax has hidden them. If not, repeat the process.
