How to Care for a Cherry Laminate Floor

Dirt, sand, grit, oil, wax, standing liquids and many cleaning products are all enemies of cherry laminate floors. Dirt, sand and grit can scratch the surface of the laminate, which gives the floor a dull look. Maintaining a laminate floor is different from taking care of tile or carpet. Choosing the correct products and maintenance techniques will ensure the longevity of cherry laminate.

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep or vacuum up any loose dirt on the cherry laminate floor.

    • 2

Pour either vinegar or a window cleaner into a spray bottle. Spritz the floor and mop, for light cleaning and adding shine. Avoid waxing or polishing cherry laminate.

    • 3

Mop up spills as they occur. Do not use scouring powder, steel wool, or abrasive products on cherry laminate. Avoid using soap-based, citrus-oil-based, chlorinated, or ammoniated cleaners on cherry laminate floors.

    • 4

Harden candle wax or gum with a piece of ice, then scrape it off with a plastic scraper or credit card.

    • 5

Place floor mats in front of entryways to collect dirt from the bottoms of shoes before it is tracked over the floor.

    • 6

Place furniture glides under the foot of each piece of furniture on the cherry laminate floor. Laminate is not difficult to scratch, and movement from furniture can easily result in scratches. Glides are available at home improvement stores or general retailers.

    • 7

Maintain humidity indoors between 35 and 65 percent to minimize the natural expansion and contraction of the wood.
