How to Get Fireplace Burn Marks Off Hardwood Floors

Few things look as beautiful as a lit fireplace against a classic hardwood floor, but the heat and flying ashes can leave marks behind. Embers that pop out of a fireplace easily leave marks on the floor. Sometimes, just the heat of keeping a roaring fire can tarnish the hardwood floor below the fireplace. Fortunately, you can repair most burn marks on hardwood.

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep the area in front of the fireplace with a broom to remove loose dirt and ash. You will need a clean surface to work with or the dirt could scratch the floor.

    • 2

Mix 2 tablespoons of gum turpentine and 4 tablespoons of boiled linseed oil in a gallon of hot water. Put on rubber gloves to handle the hot mixture. Dip a cloth in the mixture and wring out any excess fluid.

    • 3

Use the wet cloth to buff the marked area of the wood. Run the cloth across each mark in a small circular pattern. Wipe the area with a dry cloth and allow the floor to dry. This mixture will remove very light marks and recondition the wood.

    • 4

Lightly sand the marks with sandpaper. Place the sandpaper in your hand and apply it directly over the mark. Gently move the sandpaper back and forth across the mark until the mark no longer appears, being carefully to sand evenly. Wipe the area with a clean cloth to remove any sanding residue.

    • 5

Apply a finishing stain matching the color of your hardwood over the sanded areas. Test the color of the stain against the color of your hardwood before applying. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to get the best results.

    • 6

Scrape deeper burns out of the hardwood with a razor blade. Press the razor blade against the edge of the burn and push the blade away from you in quick, gentle motions. Repeat until you remove the burned wood completely.

    • 7

Apply a thin coat of putty in the hole after removing all of the burnt area. Run a paint scraper or other flat tool over the length of the hole to ensure the putty lays flat with the wood. Allow the putty to dry. Cover the putty with a wood stain matching the color of your hardwood.
