How to Get the Bubbles Out of Linoleum Flooring

Linoleum flooring is budget-friendly, available in a wide range of colors and styles and easy to maintain. Installing linoleum is not for the inexperienced do-it-yourselfer, however. Linoleum sheeting is heavy and requires some expertise to install correctly. Even with the aid of a professional, you may notice areas of bubbling soon after a new linoleum installation. These air bubbles are generally caused by a loss of adhesion between the glue and the linoleum. There is no need for a return visit from the installer if the bubbled areas are small. This is a simple fix you can handle yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Puncture the center of the bubble with a sharp utility knife. Carefully cut across the width of the bubble.

    • 2

Flatten the bubble down onto the floor to let the air escape. Once the linoleum is flattened, check to see if there is any overlap. If so, carefully trim it away until the two edges meet perfectly.

    • 3

Lift up the edges of the cut linoleum. Use the utility knife to scrape away any dried adhesive underneath the linoleum's surface.

    • 4

Put on a pair of work gloves. Apply a small amount of linoleum adhesive under the linoleum with a thin putty knife.

    • 5

Press the cut edges down to activate the linoleum adhesive. Dampen a soft cloth and wipe away any adhesive that oozes out.

    • 6

Place a dry cloth over the area then place a heavy paint can or pile of books on top of the cloth to help the adhesive bond with the linoleum.
