How to Hide Furniture Imprints on a Carpet

That gigantic wooden bed might be beautiful, but it could wreak havoc on your brand new carpet. Prolonged pressure from heavy furniture crushes delicate carpet fibers, leaving behind large, unsightly dents. Professional carpet installers can repair crushed spots, but the cost is often more than many homeowners want to spend. Hiding furniture imprints keeps your room presentable and keeps your pocketbook full.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all furniture from the room. If the furniture is too large to lift by yourself, push it to the opposite side of the room.

    • 2

Cover offending furniture imprints with throw rugs. Select a rug that matches the color and decor of the room, and set it over the imprints before moving the furniture back into place.

    • 3

Brush fibers back into shape to hide furniture imprints. Use a clean, stiff scrub or shoe brush, and brush the fibers from the base of the carpet up. This pulls the carpet back into shape and gently separates the individual fibers for a full, fluffy look.

    • 4

Steam imprinted spots to fluff up crushed fibers. Hold the steam cleaner 6 inches from the spot, and run the nozzle back and forth across the spot. Brush the smashed fibers back up with your fingers, and then use a stiff brush to gently fluff the carpet. Leave the spots to dry overnight before replacing furniture. If your carpets are acrylic or mod-acrylic fibers, skip the steam and fluff fibers with a hairdryer instead.
