How to Repair a Small Splinter in a Wood Floor

Despite their overall durability, hardwood floors are subject to surface damage from everyday wear and tear. Foot traffic, dropped objects, and changes in humidity and temperature contribute to problems with wood flooring such as splintering. Repairing minor splinters is a simple project for the do-it-yourselfer.

Things You'll Need

  • Tweezers or toothpicks
  • Wood glue
  • Wood putty
  • Putty knife
  • Rag
  • Heavy weight (such as a pile of books)
  • 180-grit sandpaper

Instructions

    • 1

Use toothpicks or a pair of tweezers to clean out any dirt and debris that has accumulated under and around the splinter. If the splintered wood has not already separated from the floor, avoid breaking it off as it will be a smoother repair if the wood remains intact. If it has already broken off, hold on to the largest piece or pieces.

    • 2

Apply a few dabs of wood glue to the splinter and press it back into place. Clean off any excess glue with a damp rag.

    • 3

Apply enough wood putty to fill in any spaces surrounding the splinter. When splintering occurs, there are usually small pieces of wood missing around the larger splintered piece or pieces. If you can't find an exact match to the color of your wood, mix two wood putty colors together.

    • 4

Place a heavy weight such as a pile of books or full paint can on top of the repair. Allow the wood putty to dry for the time recommended by the manufacturer.

    • 5

Sand the wood putty until it is smooth and flush with the wood floor.
