How to Fix Scratches on a Dark Wood Laminate Shiny Floor

If you have a laminate floor that has been scratched multiple times, don't attempt to sand down the surface of the floor, as you might do with a wood floor. Although laminate may look like wood, it is generally a wood veneer, and if you sand it, all you will do is make the situation worse. The easiest way to repair scratches in dark laminate is to fill them in with wax putty, or a standard crayon, which mimics the shiny surface of the floor and hides the scratches.

Things You'll Need

  • Washcloth
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Crayon (dark color of the laminate)
  • Old credit card

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe down the scratched area of the floor with an alcohol-dampened washcloth remove all dust or dirt.

    • 2

Lay your crayon on its side and lightly scrape it back and forth across the scratched area, pressing it firmly enough that the wax of the crayon is pressed into the scratches. Continue until the scratches are completely filled in.

    • 3

Scrape the credit card forward through the wax, taking up any residual crayon that’s sitting on the surface but leaving it in the scratches. Brush away the loosened wax.

    • 4

Wet the washcloth again with rubbing alcohol and rub down the area to remove any remaining surface wax from the crayon, leaving it in the scratches.
