Removing Adhesive From a Floor with 2-Sided Tape

Two-sided, or double-sided, tape is a strong adhesive that leaves a residue that is challenging to remove from your floors. This tape is effective in installing certain types of flooring, such as carpeting and linoleum, although it has many more uses. Leaving the tape residue on your floor results in an unsightly mess, since the adhesive attracts dust and debris. Getting rid of it requires elbow grease, patience and the correct products and tools.

Instructions

  1. Acetone Method

    • 1

Wet a cleaning cloth with nail polish remover that contains acetone.

    • 2

Rub the damp cloth only on the adhesive.

    • 3

Scrape off any remaining residue with a plastic scraper or an old credit card.

    • 4

Dampen a sponge and wipe it over the area to rinse any traces of the nail polish remover.

    Penetrating Oil Method

    • 5

Squirt a small amount of an all-purpose, penetrating oil on the adhesive.

    • 6

Wait for the oil to loosen the adhesive. This will take about five to 10 minutes.

    • 7

Wipe off the residue with a soft cloth.

    • 8

Mop the floor with the cleaner recommended by the manufacturer. This prevents anyone from slipping on the oily residue.

    Adhesive Removal Product

    • 9

Apply the adhesive removal solvent to the residue according to the label directions.

    • 10

Wait for the product to dissolve the adhesive for the time recommended on the label.

    • 11

Rinse the floor with a damp sponge, and then mop it with your normal cleaning solution.
