How to Paint Over a Crack in a Garage

Over time, garage floors become cracked and soiled. Breaking out a concrete garage floor slab and replacing in with a freshly poured one is not only hard work, but is also expensive. A less expensive option is simply repainting the floor. Specially formatted concrete paint and primer is available at home improvement stores and is no harder to apply than standard wall paint.

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep the cracked concrete floor with a broom to remove any debris. Make sure to remove any concrete particles from the crack that are smaller than a pencil eraser because they will interfere with the paint application.

    • 2

Wash the floor with soapy water. Let it air dry for 24 to 48 hours. The paint will not adhere correctly if the floor is still damp.

    • 3

Pour 4 inches of concrete paint primer into a paint pan. Paint the cracked area first with a paintbrush; make sure to cover every tiny bit of the uneven surface around the crack.

    • 4

Coat the rest concrete floor with a thin, even layer of primer, using a long-handled paint roller to avoid having to be on your hands and knees. Start painting in the farthest corner of the garage and work your way outward.

    • 5

Allow the primer to dry for 24 hours. Wash the paint pan, brush and roller.

    • 6

Repeat steps three through four with the concrete paint. Wait two to three hours and then add an additional coat of paint if necessary. Continue until the desired effect has been achieved. Wait 24 hours for the paint to fully dry.
