How to Glue a Metal Strip to a Porcelain Floor

Porcelain floors are durable and decorative options for a variety of rooms in the home, especially bathrooms and kitchens. Porcelain is a ceramic surface that resists stains and water damage, but can chip if hard objects are dropped on it. If you need to glue a metal strip to a porcelain floor, a strong adhesive is required that bonds to the porcelain’s smooth. In addition, proper curing fully cements the metal strip in place.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a bucket with 1 gallon of warm water and 1 to 2 teaspoons of liquid dish soap. Insert a nylon scrubber sponge into the soap mixture and thoroughly scrub the floor area where you are installing the metal strip. Using circular motions ensure you remove all oil and grime from the surface. Empty the bucket and refill it with clean water. Rinse the sponge thoroughly and then wipe the floor, removing the soap residue.

    • 2

Wipe the floor area thoroughly with a towel to remove moisture. Allow the floor to sit for 10 to 15 minutes.

    • 3

Place the metal strip on the porcelain floor for installation. Trace around the perimeter of the strip using a grease pencil.

    • 4

Turn the metal strip over and place it on a paper towel or a newspaper. Open a tube of clear two-part epoxy glue and squeeze the top plunger dispensing a one-quarter inch ribbon along the strip’s back center.

    • 5

Spread the glue over the metal strip’s back all the way to the edges using a flat stick.

    • 6

Pick up the metal strip and turn it with the glue facing downward. Place it inside the grease pencil lines and then firmly press down.

    • 7

Wiping the metal strip’s perimeter immediately using a damp sponge cleans up excess glue from the floor.

    • 8

Place pieces of painter's tape over the strip and extend the tape’s edges onto the porcelain floor. Apply at least two to three pieces at equal distances along the strip. Leave the tape in place for three hours, and then remove the strips.
