Resealing Concrete Garage Floors

Concrete sealer enhances the appearance of your garage floor and protects the surface from oil and grease stains, chemical spills, and wear and tear of vehicle traffic. The concrete surface needs to be resealed periodically, usually every two or three years, to keep the floor protected. Set aside a couple of days to complete the project, to allow adequate drying time.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all items from the garage. Store them in a safe place, since you will not be able to put them back into the garage for at least 24 hours after your project is complete. Sweep the garage floor with a broom to remove all dust and debris.

    • 2

Wash the floor with a mild detergent cleaner, allowing the cleaner to soak into stained areas for at least 15 minutes. Scrub the floor with a long-handled scrub brush. Rinse the surface with clear water.

    • 3

Allow the floor to dry thoroughly for 24 hours before you apply sealer. Use fans to speed up the drying process.

    • 4

Tape baseboards with painter’s tape to prevent sealer from causing damage to the wood, if that is a concern.

    • 5

Mix antiskid solution into the sealer according to the manufacturer's recommendations, if you want your floor to have a nonskid surface. Stir the mixture throughout application to keep it mixed properly.

    • 6

Pour the sealer into a paint tray. Use a paintbrush to apply the sealer to areas where the previous sealer has worn away. This will help you get an even sheen on the floor and give high-traffic areas extra protection. Cut in around edges and corners of the garage with a paintbrush.

    • 7

Dip a long-handled roller into the paint tray. Roll off excess sealer on the edge of the tray. Roll the sealer onto the garage floor with even strokes. Roll out any puddles that occur during application. Apply a second coat when the surface is no longer tacky to the touch.

Wait 24 hours before allowing foot traffic on the floor. Let the sealer cure for at least three days before you park a vehicle in the garage.
