Sweep or damp mop the floor at least once a day to prevent grit, debris and sand from scratching the shiny finish off the floor. Add 3 to 4 ounces of neutral detergent per gallon of water when damp mopping. You also want to keep all outside entrance areas, like porches, free of sand, so it’s not tracked into the property.
Remove stains, spills and scuff marks immediately to stop them from becoming permanent. Purchase a nonabrasive polish cleaner to eliminate heel and scuff marks. Use isopropyl alcohol, acetone, mineral spirits or lighter fluid to remove the stains before they set into the VCT flooring.
Scrub the VCT flooring using an automatic floor machine and scrub pad every six to 12 months or when needed to clean and polish the VCT floor. Use a green or blue pad for a deep scrub or red for a light scrub. Thoroughly rinse the floor with water then let dry. Apply approximately three thin layers of polish and stain-resistant sealer to the floor.
Take preventative measures to reduce the deterioration of VCT flooring. For example, use mats -- without rubber backing -- and entry rugs to catch debris and grit. Frequently relocate furniture to reduce the chances of dents on the floor. Also, don’t place appliances that generate heat, such as a refrigerator or stove, on VCT flooring. The appliances may ruin the polish.
