Ripping Up Laminate Tile

Laminate floor tiles are often chosen because they make the installation process so much easier. These tiles are usually of the peel-and-stick variety and while it is a breeze to install them and cut them to size, removing them can be an entirely different matter. Depending on the amount of floor traffic that has been on the tile, this job will either be easy, or it will take a little extra time to coax up the old floor.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on gloves and knee pads. This is a strenuous and dirty job. Put on kneepads since you will be kneeling for a long period, and gloves to protect your hands from the adhesive.

    • 2

Spray hot water on the edges of the laminate tile. Let this set for a few minutes.

    • 3

Scrape up the tile. Place the floor scraper under the edge of the laminate tile and begin peeling it off. Depending on the original adhesive, it might come easily and in one piece, or you may have to scrape off strips. Use pliers to help you get a better grip if you need to pull the tile off.

Apply adhesive remover. If the tile won't budge, score through it with a utility knife making a tic-tac-toe pattern on the tile. Pour adhesive remover over the tile and let it set. The scoring will help the remover get down into the adhesive. Wait a few minutes and try scraping it off again. It should come easily.

Remove all the tile bits. Use your floor scraper to go back over the floor to catch any small pieces of tile that may have remained. The floor can now be refinished.
