How to Fix a Burnt Wood Floor

The natural and inviting appearance of a wood floor adds beauty and value to any home. Burn marks, however, instantly diminish wood flooring’s aesthetic appeal. Inadvertently dropping a hot iron or burning cigarette onto a wood floor typically causes dark burn marks, which may char the wood fibers. While minor surface burns pose little hassle to remove, deeper burns that char the wood are more time consuming to eradicate. Regardless of the severity of the burn, immediately fix the burnt wood to restore the floor’s appearance.

Instructions

    • 1

Moisten a clean rag with water. Wipe the burnt wood with the slightly moist rag to capture loose grime.

    • 2

Wipe the wood with a towel. Allow the burnt wood to dry fully before proceeding.

    • 3

Coat super-fine steel wool with paste wax. Rub the burnt area with the waxy steel wool along the wood’s grain. Remove as much of the burn from the wood as possible.

    • 4

Eradicate charred wood fibers from the wood floor if the burn is too deep to simply buff out. Carefully scrape the charred fragments from the floor using a penknife. Remove only the burnt wood, nothing else.

    • 5

Buff the scraped wood with fine-grit sandpaper to smooth the area. Sand along the wood’s grain, slightly feathering into the surrounding wood to camouflage the repair.

    • 6

Wipe the freshly sanded wood with a tack cloth to remove all dust from the wood.

    • 7

Touch up the sanded area with wood stain matching the flooring. Apply the stain evenly with a paintbrush, and then let the stain air-dry completely.

    • 8

Coat the dried stain with the same wood finish used on the surrounding wood. Apply the finish to the repaired area according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If the wood floor is unfinished, simply buff the repaired spot with paste wax using a clean rag.
