The subfloor, regardless of what type, must be clean, smooth, dry, defect-free, firm and flat. It must be suitable for the use of a smoothing compound if the need for such is necessary. As in most vinyl tiling, imperfections in the sub-flooring may penetrate through the Amtico tiling. A smoothing compound will eradicate this issue. Amtico flooring can be installed over a radiant heat system; however, it is recommended that the system be turned off for 48 hours before and after installation. This allows the adhesive time to settle properly.
Amitco manufactures three different adhesives for its flooring products. These are Amtico International HT and SF adhesives, Amtico 373 adhesive, Amtico PS adhesive or Amtico Universal 2-part adhesive. Only these adhesives fall under the Amtico International warranty, so there is no guarantee if any other brand is used. Follow all label instructions.
Apply the adhesive using a notched trowel held at a 60-degree angle. Apply evenly, without voids or areas of excessive adhesive. Spread only enough to cover an area within the allotted working time in accordance with the label instructions. Install Amtico tiles according to the pre-determined pattern and remove all excess adhesive between tiles immediately with a clean, soapy cloth or denatured alcohol, depending on the type of adhesive. If the adhesive dries or becomes crusty before laying the tile, scrape it off and apply new adhesive. Do not work on the installed tiles, as this will cause them to shift.
As soon as the adhesive is stable enough to allow, the flooring must be rolled in both directions using a 100-lb., three-section roller. To make it easier, clean as you go. Solvents or mineral spirits should not be used on Amtico Stratica tile.
