Removing the Baseboard From Laminate Flooring

Moisture damage from floods, spills and extreme humidity can cause thin laminate flooring sheets to bubble, curve and warp. When this occurs, the laminate should be removed to air out the underlying floorboards and prevent decay. Before removing laminate, you must pry off the baseboard trim at the base of the walls. This is easily accomplished with a few common household tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Utility knife
  • Stud finder
  • Rubber mallet or hammer (optional)
  • Pry bar, flat-tipped screwdriver or putty knife

Instructions

    • 1

Run a utility knife around the top edge of the baseboard to loosen paint.

    • 2

Locate and mark the studs in the wall using a stud finder.

    • 3

Insert a pry bar, flat-tipped screwdriver or putty knife slowly and carefully between the wall and the top edge of the baseboard. Insert the tool at a stud location to prevent poking holes in the wall.

    • 4

Strike the top of the flat tipped screwdriver or putty knife gently with a rubber mallet or hammer to pry the baseboard away from the wall. If you are using a pry bar, simply pull the bar toward you to loosen the molding.

    • 5

Repeat this process at all stud locations until the baseboard is completely removed.
