How Can I Repair Laminate Flooring with a Moisture Bubble?

Laminate flooring uses thin wood sheets over inexpensive floorboards to achieve a look similar to hardwood flooring. Extreme moisture from flooding or steam can cause bubbles to develop in the thin sheets. Bubbles may also form as a result of improper gluing. In either case, you can iron laminate sheets or re-glue them to eliminate imperfections.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Allow the floor to dry out as much as possible.

    • 2

Place a cotton cloth over the damaged part of the flooring. Iron the cloth using a medium-high setting to reactivate the glue and smooth out the bubbled area. If this method proves ineffective, or if the floor is excessively wet, you will need to remove the laminate.

    • 3

Inject contact cement releaser into an inconspicuous area of the floor. Gently separate the laminate from the underlying floorboards, injecting additional contact cement to dissolve glue as you work. Set the laminate in a well-ventilated area and allow both the laminate and the floorboards to dry out thoroughly.

    • 4

Spread a thin, even coat of contact cement over the floorboards. Replace the laminate you peeled off in the last step. Roll over the laminate with a paint roller to ensure a smooth surface.

Place a cotton cloth over the laminate and run over it with an iron on medium-high heat to bond the laminate to the glue.
