Removing the Mortar Bed From Tile

Removing tiles installed on a mortar bed requires hard work and the correct tools. Although this is a messy and labor-intensive job, it allows you to lay new flooring that dramatically changes the appearance of the room. Removing this type of flooring does not require a permit, but if you are part of a homeowner's association, check with them first before beginning the project.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect any water pipes that may hinder your work. Remove any toilets or other obstacles as well.

    • 2

Wear heavy duty work gloves and safety goggles while busting through the tile. The shards are quite sharp and may cause severe injuries.

    • 3

Position a cold chisel upright on the tile.

    • 4

Hit the chisel with a sledgehammer that weighs about three pounds. This will crumble the tile and mortar. Don't go beyond the depth of the tar paper underneath the mortar bed. (

    • 5

Repeat the action with the cold chisel and sledgehammer until all the mortar bed is loose.

    • 6

Pry the mortar bed and tile sections up with a large flatbar tool.

    • 7

Transport the debris to a recycling center to discard it.
