How to Make Stair Treads With Carpet in the Middle

Stair tread’s main function is to prevent people from slipping on wooden steps but it can also function as a way of covering up stains or wear on an old carpet that you can’t afford to replace. You can purchase carpeted stair treads and install them over your stairs, with carpet in the middle, or you can make your own treads with scrap carpet.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide what size carpet tread you’d like to make. Depending on your needs, carpet tread should cover most of the stair platform. Mark these measurements on the back of the carpeting you are working with by drawing a rectangle on the carpet backing. Use a level and ruler to ensure the lines are even and straight.

Cut the rectangle out of the carpet by running a razor blade over the carpet backing. Use a ruler to keep the razor blade straight.

    • 3

Dab the edges of the carpet backing that you cut with carpet glue. Don’t get the carpet glue on the carpet fibers as this can damage them permanently. Let the glue dry completely. This process will prevent the carpet backing from fraying.

Line each of the edges of the carpet with double-sided carpet tape. Pull off the other side of the tape backing and press it into the carpeted stair platform. Let the adhesive sit for several hours before walking on it to give the adhesive time to set completely.
