Remove and measure the torn portion of the carpet. Use carpet cutters or a sharp knife to cut out the damaged carpet in the shape of a square, if possible. Carpet tile squares customarily come in 18-inch squares.
Purchase a carpet tile square that matches your carpet. Contact your carpet manufacturer or bring in a piece of the carpet to the store. Most carpet companies carry carpet tile that will match your carpet. Many homeowners also choose to save a bit of extra carpet during the initial carpet installation in case this situation arises. In addition, consider purchasing about 10 percent extra in case you make a mistake cutting the carpet to fit the torn area, or you need to replace other areas of your carpet later.
Install the carpet tile square. Many carpet stores sell patch kits to assist homeowners with repairing their carpet. You will need to cut the carpet tile to fit the torn area, using a carpet cutter or sharp shears to cut the carpet. Remember, you want the carpet tile to blend into the old carpet and not look as though it is a patch.
Apply carpet adhesive to the back of the carpet tile and press down firmly. It is important to press down on the patch evenly to prevent pockets of air in the carpet. In addition, place heavy books or other items on the patch overnight to ensure the patch dries completely flat.
