Buffing a Prefinished Floor

With use, prefinished floors lose their original sheen due to wear and tear of the waxed finish. Restoring the glossy sheen once it begins to dull is not difficult. All that’s needed is the application of a bit of paste wax and a quick buffing, and you’ll soon find that you’ve recreated that same glossy glow that was present on your floor at installation.

Things You'll Need

  • Paste wax
  • Soft rag
  • Floor buffer with fiber bristle brush attachment

Instructions

    • 1

Place a small amount of paste wax onto a soft rag, forming a circle in the center of the rag about the size of a quarter.

    • 2

Apply the wax to the prefinished floor, rubbing it into the surface along the grain of the wood until you cover a section of about 4 square feet. Reapply wax to the rag if it runs dry before completing the section coverage.

    • 3

Allow the wax to sit in place drying out for about 30 minutes until it takes on a hazy grayish appearance on the hardwood.

    • 4

Attach a fiber bristle brush attachment to the base of a floor buffer. Move the buffer to the waxed section of the floor and turn it on. Move the buffer over the section of flooring using small, circular motions to cover the floor with the bristle brush. Buff the floor with the brush until the gray waxy haze develops into a glossy shine.

    • 5

Turn off the buffer when you complete the section. Apply wax to an adjoining section of flooring, overlapping the edge of the previous section by 2 inches. Repeat the buffing process, and then repeat the application, buffing over the remainder of the floor surface and shining the entire prefinished floor covering.
