How to Repair a Squeaky Floor Through the Carpet

Ripping up your carpet to repair a squeaky floorboard will be hard work and could result in your pile being damaged before it's re-laid. Fortunately, it's possible to buy a tool that's designed specifically for the purpose of solving this tricky problem while your carpet remains in situ. A floorboard repair kit works by driving special screws that are undetectable once in place through both your carpet and floorboards.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a flooring repair kit that's designed to work through carpets. You can buy a kit that consists of special screws that snap in half and an alignment tripod from hardware stores or online.

    • 2

Locate the floor joists nearest to your squeaky floorboard using a stud finder. They will usually be placed around 16 inches apart.

    • 3

Attach the special drill bit that came with your repair kit to your drill.

    • 4

Position the alignment tripod over the joists at one end of your room and drill guide screws through your carpet, floorboards and joists. Then, drill two guide screws to the other end of your joists.

    • 5

Run strings along your joists between your guide screws.

    • 6

Use the alignment tripod to drill screws through your floorboards and into your joists. You can then use the tool on the side of the tripod to snap off the tops of your screws. This will secure your squeaky floorboard to your joists and leave no sign of damage to your carpet.
