Put on a pair of rubber gloves and a dust mask.
Mix 1 quart of water and roughly 1/2 teaspoon of nonionic cleaning detergent.
Wipe the entire surface of the lead, including grooves and crevices, with a cotton wool cloth moistened in the soap solution.
Wipe the lead down with a cotton wool cloth moistened with water to remove any traces of the soap solution. Allow the lead to dry for 24 hours in a cool, dry, relatively dust-free place.
Shake the primer well and pour the amount you think you will need into a separate container. You can always add more later. Do not dip the brush directly into the primer's original container. You will contaminate the supply. Apply a single coat of primer to the lead. Use the primer recommended by the bituminous coating. Allow the primer coat to dry for the manufacturer-recommended amount of time.
Shake the container well and pour the amount you think you will need into a separate container. Do not dip the brush directly into the main container. Apply a coat of bituminous coating onto the lead. Allow the bituminous coating to dry for the manufacturer-recommended amount of time. Apply two subsequent coats. Allow each coat to dry hard for the manufacturer-recommended amount of time before applying the next.
Discard the gloves, breathing mask, excess paint, containers and paintbrushes. Wash your clothing immediately in a load by themselves.
