Leaking in the Cellar Foundation at the Seams

Cellars and basements are the most common places for water seepage to occur in a home. Because these rooms are below ground, excess rain seeps through the soil and into the walls. In some cases, the water only penetrates through the seams between the walls or the walls and the floors. These locations often contain small cracks undetectable to the eye. Stopping these seam leaks requires you to chisel out part of the material and fill it with a waterproof patch.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on work gloves and safety glasses before beginning the repair, as the flooring chips can fly up and cause injury.

    • 2

Walk to one corner of the cellar floor and place the tip of a cold chisel over the seam between the floor and the wall. Tap the chisel with a hammer to begin cutting out a groove.

    • 3

Continue hitting the chisel until you create a 1/2-inch-deep groove in the seam areas.

    • 4

Slide the chisel down to a fresh portion of the seam and repeat the process to cut a groove there as well. Cut the groove along the entire perimeter of the cellar floor until you reach the starting location.

    • 5

Pick up the largest chunks of flooring and place them into a bucket for disposal. Then sweep out the groove thoroughly using a broom to remove the debris.

    • 6

Plug in a shop vacuum and use the hose to suck out any remaining dust particles from the groove.

    • 7

Fill a wheelbarrow or a large bucket with a mixture of one part cement and two parts of fine sand. Add water to the dry ingredients until the mixture has a thick mudlike consistency.

    • 8

Scoop up the mixture using a trowel and spread it into the groove you cut along the cellar wall. After filling the groove completely, smooth it out so you achieve a slope from the bottom of the wall to the base of the floor.
