How to Fix a Crack in a Floor Beam

If you have noticed that one of the floor beams or joists supporting your floor is cracked, you'll need to address it immediately. Cracked joists can lead to a flooring collapse, especially if something heavy is placed directly over the area. This repair is only for cracked joists and should not be used for joists that are completely broken or those with deep cracks that have rendered the wood structurally unsound.

Things You'll Need

  • 2-by-4 boards (2)
  • Hand saw or circular saw
  • Wood glue
  • Paintbrush
  • Vise or clamps
  • Cordless drill
  • Wood screws

Instructions

    • 1

Access the floor joists. Go to the level on your house below the floor with the cracked beam. You may need to remove ceiling material so you can access the beam.

    • 2

Cut two footlong boards with a hand saw to fit the floor beam.

    • 3

Apply wood glue to the back of the new boards, using the paintbrush to spread it evenly.

    • 4

Place the boards on either side of the cracked beam. Hold them in place with a wood vise. Clamp the boards and beam together firmly to get a good seal.

    • 5

Insert wood screws through the sides of the boards into the floor beam. Use screws that are long enough to completely penetrate the new boards and another 1 1/2 inches into the beam. Use at least three screws per board -- one on each end and one in the middle.

    • 6

Keep the vise on the boards until the glue has cured. Even though you attached screws, the adhesive still needs to cure properly. Follow manufacturer directions for the length of curing time or wait at least eight hours before removing the vise.
