How to Install No Hub Floor Drains

Most floor drains have a threaded bottom that screws into a hub installed in the floor. However, if a hub isn't present, you can also install a no-hub drain that connects to the underlying pipe using a special compression coupler. The coupler contains a rubber gasket and clamps that prevent water leaks once you fully tighten them. No-hub drains are ideal in locations where you have access to the bottom side of the floor because you must have adequate pipe length to install them.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand over the floor opening where you are installing the no-hub drain and ask your helper to enter the basement or crawl space directly under it. Ask her to push up on the pipe until it extends above the floor hole at least 2 to 3 inches.

    • 2

Examine the end of the pipe to ensure it is cut flat and if needed, trim off additional pipe material using a hack saw or a power saw.

    • 3

Slide the no-hub metal coupler around the top of the pipe and then insert the black rubber portion of the coupler over the bottom of the no-hub drain. The black gasket should extend over the bottom of the drain by half.

    • 4

Insert the no-hub drain over the pipe in the floor until the pipe rises up under the gasket and meets the edge of the drain.

    • 5

Slide the metal coupler over the rubber gasket until it is centered. Tighten each screw in the coupler using a screwdriver until the metal starts to compress the rubber gasket, which means it has a water-tight seal. Depending on the type of coupler you have, you must tighten between four and six screws.

    • 6

Instruct the other person to release the drain pipe slowly and ensure that it lowers into the floor hole and sits flush.
