The Varathane floor sander has two components, each with a separate motor. The orbital sander has a triple-rotating motor that allows three sanding discs to function at once. The second motor is on the dust vacuum that keeps dust to a minimum in the room. It is best to turn on the vacuum first and shut it down last to ensure that you aren't overwhelmed with dust.
In order to get the best sanding in an efficient amount of time, purchase plenty of sanding discs. The first discs to use should be 36 grit paper. This will remove the varnish, but leave scratches in the floor. Next, you’ll want to use a 90 and then a 180 grit paper to progressively sand out the scratches and finish off with a clean floor.
The Varathane floor sander will not reach every area of your floor. The edges and corners must be done with a handheld vibrating sander. Additionally, the Varathane sander will not remove deep scratches and stains, so these must be addressed using a wood scraper. If the damage is more serious, replace the damaged board.
A hardwood floor must be completely level before you sand. If you notice any boards that seem raised, you’ll want to drill some wood screws into the boards and bring the boards level again with the floor. Otherwise, the sanding will leave large areas that still have polyurethane varnish.
