Laying Porcelain Tile: Cement and Quikrete Vinyl Patcher

Porcelain tile is commonly laid over sturdy concrete substrate. If an accident damages the porcelain tile significantly enough to gouge the concrete beneath it, you must first patch the concrete with a concrete patching compound before laying new porcelain tile. Quikrete Vinyl Concrete Patcher is ideal for a small concrete patching job such as this. It is easy to mix and apply and provides a sound substrate for the new layer of porcelain tile.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any broken pieces of porcelain tile. Wedge a margin trowel underneath the broken tile and tap it with a hammer to lift individual broken tiles. Use the same method to lift underlying mortar from beneath the broken tiles.

    • 2

Remove loose or fractured sections of concrete with a hammer and chisel or wire brush.

    • 3

Scrub the area to be patched with a stiff bristled brush and a concrete cleaner. Rinse the area thoroughly with water. Soak up any puddled water with a sponge.

    • 4

Mix seven parts Quikrete Vinyl Concrete Patcher with one part water. Pour the water first, and add the Quikrete. Mix the Quikrete and water continually for three to five minutes with your margin trowel. The Quikrete should be smooth, free of lumps and roughly the consistency of putty.

    • 5

Leave the mixed Quikrete to rest for five minutes, then stir the mixture once more before proceeding to Step 6.

    • 6

Dampen the area to be patched. Add enough water to moisten the surface. Soak up any puddled water with a sponge.

    • 7

Spread the Quikrete into the damaged area in layers with your margin trowel. Press and smooth the layers until the damaged area is filled and level with the surrounding concrete. Take care not to get any Quikrete on the surrounding porcelain tile. Wipe up any accidental applications immediately with a wet sponge. Do not get any water on the installed layers of Quikrete, because the moisture will discolor the Quikrete.

    • 8

Allow the Quikrete to dry and cure for at least three days before applying a new layer of mortar and porcelain tile.
