How to Use the Silver Line Edging Sander

A Silver Line edging sander is often used along with a Silver Line sander to smooth the surface of hardwood flooring. The SL-7 edging sander is able to get close to the walls and into tight spots that the larger SL-8 floor sander cannot reach. In most instances, you can rent the Silver Line sanders. Take care to remove all staples, screws and nails from the floor’s surface before using the sanding equipment, or you may damage the pads or the drum.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all of the furnishings, drapes and carpets from the room where you are using the edging sander. Pull up old carpeting and tack strips. Dispose of them properly. Hang plastic sheeting over the doors, windows and heating ducts to help minimize sawdust in the rest of the house.

    • 2

Attach 20-grit sandpaper to the SL-7 edging sander after you use 20-grit sandpaper on the open areas of the floor with the SL-8. Snap the connectors on the sander in place to hold the sandpaper firmly against the machine. This sandpaper grit removes the top layer of varnish on the floor and levels the wood.

    • 3

Plug in the machine. Sand along the edge of the room, working with the grain of the wood flooring. Work from left to right. Allow the edging sander to do the work. Do not apply pressure or you may remove more wood than necessary. Change the piece of sandpaper whenever the machine seems to be working less efficiently.

    • 4

Change the sandpaper to 36- or 40-grit to sand both the middle of the floor with the SL-8 and the edge with the SL-7 edger. This level of sandpaper continues the leveling process and removes some scratches. Work in the same manner you did in Step 2.

    • 5

Remove the 36- or 40-grit paper and replace it with 60-grit sandpaper. This step removes any remaining scratches. Repeat the process of Step 2.

    • 6

Examine the floor for gaps between the hardwood planks. Add wood filler, as necessary, with a putty knife and smooth it down. Allow the filler to dry before proceeding with the final sanding.

    • 7

Smooth the entire surface of the floor one last time with 100-grit sandpaper on the sanders.
