Repairing Laminate Flooring That Is Cut Off at the Bottom Groove Gap

Many laminate floors have a tongue and groove installation method with one side of the board containing a groove and the other side containing a tongue, or a small lip. The tongue side simply snaps into the groove side, which holds the boards flush with the subfloor. If you have a laminate board with a broken lower groove, it likely raises up from the floor. The solution is to remove the board and glue it down or install a new board.

  • Pencil
  • Drill
  • 3/16-inch bit
  • Safety glasses

Instructions

    • 1

Place a ruler or a tape measure on top of the laminate board and measure over from one end to 1 1/2 inches. Draw a line with a pencil and repeat the process on the other three sides of the board. Connect all of the lines so you have a rectangle inside the board.

    • 2

Install a 3/16-inch diameter bit into a drill and don safety glasses. Create a hole at each corner of the rectangle just until you penetrate through the laminate board, approximately 1/4 inch.

    • 3

Set the depth on a circular saw blade to 1/4 inch and plug it in. Place the blade over the pencil rectangle and cut all the way along it.

    • 4

Insert a metal putty knife into the cut groove and pry up the center portion of the damaged board. Grasp each of the remaining sides using pliers and pull them out of the floor as well.

    • 5

Cut off the tongue portion along the long side of a replacement board using the circle saw or a utility knife. Locate the short end of the board containing the tongue and cut it off as well.

    • 6

Vacuum out the subfloor area thoroughly.

    • 7

Apply laminate glue to the edges of the replacement laminate board and insert it into the space on the floor. Push it down until it snaps into place and wipe away excess glue with a rag.

Place a heavy object on top of the repaired laminate board and leave it for 24 hours.
