How to Remove Scratches from Varathane

Dragged furniture or abrasive soles on shoes can result in scratches on your Varathane-sealed floor and cause permanent damage until the scratch is filled in. Varathane creates a professional finish on your wood floors that imitates specialized treatment and consists of polyurethane to provide the thin coating used to seal and stain the floor. The type of scratch repair for your Varathane-sealed floor depends on your personal preference and the severity of the scratch, as fill sticks, touch-up markers and wood fillers are available for eliminating unsightly scratches.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe the floor with a damp cleaning cloth to eliminate dust and debris on the scratched area to prepare the floor for scratch repair.

    • 2

Pat the area dry with a dry cleaning cloth. Rub the fill stick or touch-up marker over the scratch in the direction of the wood's grain to fill the scratch. Or apply a thin layer of the wood filler to a cleaning cloth and wipe the filling solution over the scratch.

    • 3

Wipe around the scratch to remove excess filler, and wait for the filling solution to dry. The wood filler, touch-up marker and filler stick are all fast-drying products that reduce drying time while repairing your floors.

    • 4

Restain the previously scratched area with the Varathane floor finishing product to conceal the repair treatment. Restaining the floor is not necessary, however, if you're using a fill stick or touch-up marker.
