Characteristics

• Vinyl tiles resemble vinyl floor sheeting, except they come in individual, pre-cut squares. Although you can purchase vinyl tiles that require adhesive, the easiest ones come with a type of self-adhesive backing. The flexible tiles usually come in 12-by-12 inch squares, although you may find some larger or smaller sizes in certain brands and styles. The individual tiles makes this type of flooring lightweight to carry and easy to handle, compared to heavy rolls of vinyl sheeting. The tiles come in a wide array of colors and patterns.

Preparation

• As with any type of flooring material, proper preparation paves the way to a lasting, durable finish. Removing all traces of the former linoleum, as well as the old glue and any dust and debris, will help ensure the tightest bond. Depending on the condition of your underlayment, you may need to use a floor primer to provide a smooth, even surface.

Installation

• Lining up the tiles correctly is the key to making this type of floor look professional. Dividing your room into quadrants allows you to tackle small areas at a time. One of the most common methods of doing this is to measure the centers of opposite walls and use a chalk line to divide the room into four equal sections. Starting in the center corner of one quadrant, lay your first tile by peeling off the backing paper and pressing the edge of the tile along the edge of the chalk line. Butt the next tile along the bottom of the first, again using the chalk line for a guide. Cut the tiles at the outside edges of your walls to fit your room.

Considerations

• Although individual vinyl tiles are quick and easy to install, these squares of surface flooring are not suitable for all applications. Areas of high traffic may cause the corners to lift, while excess moisture can cause the adhesive bond to fail.
