How to Extract Water From Wood Flooring

Wood floors that are flooded need to be dried carefully. Flooded wood can be seriously damaged and often needs replacing. However, wood that is dried too quickly can also be damaged. Allow the wood to dry slowly, taking advantage of natural evaporation. You can speed up the process somewhat by drying out the air in the room.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all the surface water as quickly as possible. Get rid of the water with a wet/dry vacuum, then dry the wood with towels or a mop.

    • 2

Set a dehumidifier into the room, and keep it on as the floor dries.

    • 3

Heat the room to 76 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and keep it at this temperature as the wood dries.

    • 4

Place fans around the room, and set them to oscillate.

    • 5

Remove a floorboard every 2 feet by carefully prying it up with a crowbar. This allows the air to circulate and gives the wood more room to expand and contract. Remove a board only if you can do it without damaging the flooring. If the wood is glued down or you can't get it up, leave it in place.
