How to Get Rid of Squeaky Laminate Floors Over Concrete

Squeaky laminate floors are a common complaint of homeowners, and they are annoying rather than a sign of a structural problem. The noises occur when gaps develop under the laminate boards, which allows them to move up and down when someone walks on the flooring. Often an uneven subfloor is the cause. A squeaky laminate floor that lays over a concrete surface must be repaired from above the concrete. Using glue to fill the underlying gaps ends the squeaks.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify all squeaky locations on the laminate by walking over it in rows and drawing an “x” with chalk on the areas that squeak.

    • 2

Squeeze one-half teaspoon of carpenter's glue directly onto the seams between the laminate boards in one of the chalked areas.

    • 3

Press the carpenter’s glue into the seam using a plastic putty knife. Work your way along the board, gluing the entire length of the creaky area.

    • 4

Dampen a paper towel with water, and wring it out so that it does not drip. Use the paper towel to wipe away excess glue from the laminate boards' surface, making the boards completely clean. Wipe off the chalk mark from the boards, too.

    • 5

Place heavy objects such as a stack of books over the laminate boards to hold them down until the glue dries.

    • 6

Repeat the repair process with all of the other squeaky areas in the laminate floor boards.

    • 7

Remove the heavy objects after 24 hours. Step on each repaired site to hear whether or not it squeaks. If necessary, fill missed gaps with glue.
