I Used Premixed Thinset on My Shadow Floor: How Can I Seal It From Water Damage Later?

Premixed thinset is a popular choice for home shadow marble floors. It is easy to mix and apply and creates a secure bond. But premixed thinset is formulated differently than regular mortar thinset and must be treated as such. One of the biggest differences between traditional and premixed thinset is the cure time. Before you seal your shadow marble, you must allow the thinset to cure properly. Rushing the job will seal moisture in instead of protecting the floor from water damage later.

Instructions

    • 1

Cure the thinset for the recommended amount of time on the product's packaging. Premixed grout may require several days or up to one week to cure completely.

    • 2

Apply painter's tape to the wall to protect it from the sealer coat.

    • 3

Mop the floor with a marble cleaner recommended for your type of marble then mop it with plain water to remove all of the cleaner residue. Leave the floor to dry for 48 hours.

Stir the marble sealer thoroughly with a paint stirrer. Scrape the sides and bottom of the container, as you stir, to mix it well.

    • 5

Apply the sealant to the surface of the marble in an even coat. Use a paint sprayer at 40 psi or below or a long-handled paint roller and tray to apply the sealant. Spread the sealant evenly to avoid puddling.
