Things That Can Scuff Pergo Flooring

Pergo flooring is a brand of laminate that looks like hardwood, but is less expensive. Although it's relatively easy to maintain, everyday objects can scuff the floor over time. High traffic areas are more susceptible to scuff marks. Knowing what causes these marks can limit the number of markings on Pergo flooring and keep it clean and shiny for years to come.
  1. Children

    • Although Pergo flooring is child-friendly, it's still prone to accidents. Toys that children play with, such as hard toys, cars and crayons, tend to leave scuff marks behind when they're dragged or dropped on the floor. To prevent marks, place an area rug or rubber flooring in play areas. To remove existing scuff marks, add a dab of acetate or household solvent to a soft cloth and gently wipe off the mark.

    Furniture

    • Furniture pieces, such as table and chair legs, can scuff Pergo floors. This usually happens when you drag furniture pieces across the floor or when they accidentally slide out of place. To prevent scuff marks under your furniture, place an area rug beneath each piece or attach floor guides under each leg. To remove scuff marks from furniture pieces, gently drag a white tennis shoe or magic eraser over the mark until it's gone.

    Pets

    • Larger pets with sharp claws can scuff Pergo flooring when they run or slide on it. The scuff marks are sometimes difficult to see and may actually be scratch marks. To prevent scuff marks, trim your pet's nails regularly and place an area rug in pet-friendly areas. Removing scuff marks from pets can be challenging. Apply baking soda or toothpaste to a damp sponge and wipe the scuff marks off.

    Shoes and Dirt

    • Shoes, such as black hard-soled shoes and high-heeled shoes, tend to scuff Pergo flooring when you drag them across the floor as you walk. They also bring in dirt and grime from the outdoors. To prevent scuff marks, take shoes off indoors and leave them at the front door and place an area rug without a rubber or vinyl backing in high traffic areas. To remove scuff marks from shoes, add some water-displacing spray to a dry paper towel and wipe it clean. To remove scuff marks from dirt, apply a spray cleaner to the area, let the cleaner sit for a few minutes and wipe it clean.
