How to Fix a Yellowed Poplar Floor

Poplars are soft wood trees used in the production of several products, including matches, paper and flooring. Poplar flooring can last for several years if you clean and treat it properly, including laying down rugs to protect the product from wear and tear. But those same rugs used to mask your flooring from scuff marks and damage often will leave behind a yellow discoloration when moved. Eliminate the yellowing from your poplar floors with the correct products to avoid damaging the finish.

Things You'll Need

  • Broom or dust mop
  • 1 tablespoon hardwood floor cleaner
  • 1/2 gallon lukewarm water
  • Kitchen sponge or mop
  • Steel wool
  • Kitchen sponge

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep the floor with a broom or dust mop to remove any loose dirt, dust or debris. Create a mixture of one tablespoon hardwood floor cleaner and half a gallon of lukewarm water.

    • 2

Dampen a kitchen sponge or mop with the mixture and use it to remove difficult stains and the yellowing. Rinse the hardwood floor cleaning mixture away with a separate kitchen sponge or rinsed mop. If the yellowing persists, move to the next step.

    • 3

Dampen a piece of #0000 steel wool with the hardwood flooring cleaning mixture. Work the floor cleaning mixture into the poplar flooring using even, back and forth strokes to eliminate the discoloration.

    • 4

Continue to work the cleaner, rewetting the steel wool when necessary, until the yellow discoloration is completely eliminated.

    • 5

Dampen a kitchen sponge with plain water and wipe away the stray chunks of steel wool and soapy residue. Dry the flooring with a microfiber cloth to prevent streaks and watermarks.
