Hiding Chatter Marks in Wood

Chatter marking describes a series of angled gouges in wood caused by improper, uneven sanding. As a result, the finished product won't have the smooth surface coveted by wood lovers. If you see unusual pockmarks or dips in your wood flooring, paneling or cabinetry, you can make them less visible. Chatter marks that can't be sanded out without mass destruction should be covered and kept out of sight. Also, walking across deep chatter marks can provide unwanted tripping hazards for children and the elderly.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply a coat of wood oil to the wooden surface with a cheesecloth. Allow time to naturally temper or amber the wood. This process will make chatter marks less noticeable.

    • 2

Cover chatter marks in flooring with area rugs and throw rugs. Select skid-proof rugs that have a good backing.

    • 3

Sand the chatter marks away using a large floor sander. Set the sander pad at a 7-degree angle. Move the sander up and down over the chatter marks and the surrounding area. Avoid bearing down or pressing on the sander as you move the machine.

    • 4

Hang paintings and pictures on wooden walls that have chatter marked places, covering the areas.
